The Government Shutdown: October 2025

10/3/2025

The federal government officially shut down early Wednesday morning after lawmakers did not pass a short-term funding bill. As a result, hundreds of thousands of federal workers are furloughed, and many agencies are now operating with limited staff. While core programs continue, people who rely on government benefits, including SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, and VA care, may feel the impact in the form of delays, disruptions, and uncertainty.

For Medicare and Medicaid recipients, the good news is that coverage continues during a shutdown. Still, people may run into longer wait times when calling for help or see delays in processing new applications. Food and nutrition assistance programs are more immediately vulnerable. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are expected to continue for a short time but will require additional funding if a shutdown drags on for longer than a month. For households already struggling with food insecurity, these interruptions can create very real hardship.

Veterans will still have access to medical care, as VA hospitals and clinics remain open during a shutdown. Disability payments, pensions, and GI Bill benefits also continue. However, not every service is shielded. Veterans who depend on call centers or benefit hotlines may find those services temporarily unavailable, making it harder to get questions answered or issues resolved. Active-duty military personnel and their families also face unique challenges during a government shutdown. Service members are required to continue reporting for duty, but their paychecks may be delayed if the shutdown is prolonged. For families living on tight budgets, even a short disruption in pay can create significant financial strain, especially when paired with uncertainty around other support services.

A shutdown ends only when Congress passes a funding bill, and the President signs it into law. Until that happens, federal agencies are left with reduced resources, and the effects ripple out to the people who rely on their services. At BeneLynk, we see how vital these programs are to the health and stability of the people we serve. We hope an agreement is reached quickly so that individuals and families can access the benefits they need without interruption.
